Grammar and Writing
Clearly grammar is a big part of writing. Knowing how to punctuate, what tense to use, and so on shows the professional aspects to a piece of writing. However how necessary is it? Does it need to be stressed in the classroom? Or does it all depend on the type of writing being taught?
I have a minor pet peeve. One that definitely exposes my writer's heart. That pet peeve is poor grammar. The many times that I have been asked to grade/review someone else's paper, I get joy and feel disgust at fixing the many many grammatical errors in it. Is this because I have been taught that grammar is everything? And when one does not possess the proper grammar skills, they are less intelligent? Sometimes I think to myself, "What is this monster they made me into?".
Obviously, grammar does matter. Knowing the difference between your and you're can simply solve many miscommunications. It is important to know the language if you are going to be wielding it at the tip of your pen. However, writing has as many rules as it has none. Confusing, but true. Writing is all about self expression. Think of it like paint. You can choose many colors, or just one. You can use it to create whatever image you want, or none at all. There can be a specific technique to your painting or it can be as free as air. It is all up to you. Grammar falls under the category of rules and guidance. While it is important to know, it does not always need to be used. It's just another tool in the toolbox of writing. What is most important is to write what is in your heart and on your mind. Because at the end of the day, your writing is all yours.
