Dog Lover Suddenly In A Dogless Environment
College is a tough transition. I think we all can agree on that. You move away from home, live with other people your own age 24/7, and you actually have to try to be a functioning adult. It is quite the jump from our high school days just goofing around. However, no part of college has been more tough for me than living without my favorite dog, Brutus.
Brutus is a large boxer/hound mutt. He has droopy ears that flop around when he runs, a long nose that directs him to any interesting smell it picks up, a howl that even the moon can hear, and a heart as sweet as cotton candy. He is one of the greatest friends I have ever made. All my life, I have had a dog. When I was born, a chihuahua/Boston terrier mix named Bosco was my companion. After the 16 year old passed away, my family eventually decided it was time to get a new dog.
I will never forget the day we saw Brutus at the Oregon Humane Society. He seemed shy. He was only 6 months old. He was not as energetic as most puppies I had met that were his age. However, he was extremely beautiful looking. His floppy face and brindle fur captured the hearts of all my family members. My mom requested at once that we arrange a meet and greet with the adorable, then stupidly named "Twix" puppy. As soon as we got into a room with him, he opened right up. "Twix" was so excited to meet all of us. We ended up getting in a bit of a rough spot when we found out that another family had already set an offer on him. I was discouraged, but prayed to God that we could pick up the puppy and have him forever. Later that evening, the humane society called and told us that if we wanted "Twix", we could have him. Immediately we rushed and scooped up our sweet little pup. The whole ride home, our new dog slept on my lap. I stroked his head and sang him lullabies. I was in love.
As the years have gone on, now 8 year old Brutus is still my favorite face to see. When I get to see him, we chase each other, cuddle together, and I teach him new tricks still. Leaving him behind has been one of the hardest parts about being at college. I never realized how much I appreciated having a pet dog until I did not have one with me every day anymore. I look forward to the days I get to go home to see Brutus, and even more to the day I get to buy my very own puppy.
